National Railroad News: Passenger train proponents want Sunset Limited back

Speaking of Amtrak, the news that the Sunset Limited isn't being restored to a cross-country route post-Katrina is disheartening. The Sunset Limited is a travel icon and should remain a way to cross the entire country by rail, minus the Greyhound part of the experience.

Seth's Blog: No Cake!

Catching up on my reading after the holiday, I noticed this post from Seth Godin's blog describing his thoughts on traveling, customer relations and the TSA.

The post raises questions based on thought-provoking observations about what Americans are willing to tolerate to feel "safe" when traveling.

Real potential problems like aging hydraulic systems and challenges in traffic control are ignored in the rush to argue over whether there is more than the allowed amount of gel left in a bottle or to deploy highly invasive x-ray technology.

At some point, common sense needs to be applied to the travel situation.

At the very least, travelers should be allowed to choose to chance the trip with the cake (and pie and gel) on board.

Another suggestion would be to offer free Fed Ex or Express Mail to travelers so that they can send the items to the destination.

The post reminded me why I prefer to travel by car or Amtrak, where the pie and cake are actually served in the dining car, not thrown in the trash.
